The project, at One Nine Elms Tower, is a 58-storey building that includes a 200-bedroom five-star luxury hotel, retail space, offices and 491 residential apartments. The build is part of a wider scheme to replace Market Towers; two towers built in the 1970s.
Passive fire protection is important, especially for this type of public building, and so the design of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems had to meet requirements and comply with fire regulations.
The project had originally been specified with a traditional stone wool insulation, but our Technical Insulation team collaborated with the client to specify the Isover U Protect System. The system comprises of slabs, wired mats and accessories that combined, offer effective passive fire protection as well as a significant cost saving for the client. The system include Isover U Protect Slab 4.0 Alu1, a lightweight and easy to install Ultimate™ mineral wool slab. It combines all the advantages of conventional thermal and acoustic insulation with Euroclass A1 fire classification and is a component of the Isover U Protect system.
The Isover U Protect system has been tested to EN1366-1 and EN1366-8 and assessed against BS476: Pt 24. It offers up to two hours passive fire protection in HVAC ventilation and smoke extract ducts as well as one-hour passive fire protection for kitchen ducts.
There were several technical meetings with the specifier and the duct manufacturer to confirm product installation compliance with EN1366 and duct design compliance, as well as addressing on-site technical challenges and product availability.
Ductwork manufacturer and installer, L.C Insulation Services confirmed a key reason for the change in specified material was the weight saving from traditional stone wool, as it allowed for ease of handling and installation.
To help the ductwork manufacturer adapt the first design details, our Technical Insulation team also provided a product demonstration and on-site training.
We further supported the distributor by providing close collaboration with the Isover supply chain to help solve another challenge: the branch servicing the site was small and unable to stock enough product to meet the ongoing site schedule. Productive meetings between the distributor and our supply chain team found ways to support them which ensured a smooth supply to site.
As a result, more than 15,000m² of Isover U Protect Slab 4.0 ALU1 and Isover U Protect Wired Mat 4.0 Alu1, plus associated accessories are now in use in the One Nine Elms Tower.
